Payment for Dental Care Using Superannuation

Using Your Super to Pay for Dental Treatment

Cost is one of the most common reasons Australians delay dental care — and for treatments like implants, crowns, or orthodontics, the out-of-pocket expense can feel genuinely out of reach. What many people do not realise is that their superannuation may be accessible right now, not just in retirement, to cover exactly these kinds of essential health expenses.
Through a service called SuperCare, eligible patients can apply for early release of their superannuation funds under the ATO’s Compassionate Release of Super (CRS) program to pay for necessary dental treatment — for themselves or their dependants, including a spouse, partner, or child. SuperCare is an Australian company that specialises in navigating this application process on your behalf. It is not a super fund or a financial institution — it is a facilitation service that removes the complexity of applying for early access, so you can focus on getting the treatment you need.
At Dental Nook, we are proud to support patients through this process and work alongside SuperCare to make essential dental care financially accessible.
What dental treatments can be paid for with superannuation?
The ATO’s Early Release of Super program has specific eligibility criteria, and it exists to fund treatments that genuinely improve a patient’s health and function — not purely cosmetic procedures. In line with these guidelines, super funds accessed through the program at Dental Nook can be used toward:
  • Dental implants
  • Dental sedation and sleep dentistry
  • Dental crowns
  • Dentures
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Dental treatment for children under general anaesthesia
  • Braces and orthodontic treatment
  • Root canal therapy
  • General dentistry
Purely aesthetic treatments such as teeth whitening or cosmetic veneers are not eligible under the ERS program.

Your Options for Accessing Super for Dental Care

What are my options for paying for dental care with my superannuation?
The ATO’s Early Release of Superannuation (ERS) program allows access to super on compassionate grounds when specific conditions are met. When it comes to using this pathway to fund dental work, there are two routes available — engaging a specialist agency to manage the process for you, or going through the ATO directly yourself.

1. Using an agency to access your super early

If you would prefer to have experienced support guiding you through the process, working with an agency like SuperCare is a well-established option. At Dental Nook, our team is happy to work with any agency, and we have built a strong working relationship with SuperCare due to their consistent track record of successful outcomes for patients.

The process begins with an initial consultation at our clinic, where our dentists assess the condition of your teeth and put together a detailed treatment plan with associated costs. This documentation forms a core part of your application. You will need two health professionals supporting your application — your dentist and a GP. SuperCare can assist you in finding a GP to see as part of the process.

The fee for SuperCare’s assistance typically falls in the range of $700 to $800. Importantly, if your application is unsuccessful, this fee is refunded to you. There is no fee if you choose to go through the ATO directly yourself.

2. Applying for early release of super yourself (DIY)

If you prefer to manage the process independently, you can download the ERS application forms directly from the ATO, complete them yourself, and bring them to Dental Nook. In addition to your initial consultation, our team will need to prepare a supplementary report to support your application, which attracts a fee of approximately $50. Once everything is in order, you submit your completed application package to the ATO for assessment. Please note these fees are subject to change.

You Can Access Your Super Fund for Dental Work Today

You do not have to wait until retirement age to make use of your superannuation. Under the ATO’s Compassionate Release of Super legislation, eligible Australians can draw on their super savings to cover out-of-pocket dental costs right now — whether the treatment is for themselves or for a dependent child. This includes private hospital fees associated with dental procedures performed under general anaesthesia in children, which can otherwise be a significant financial barrier for families.

Early Access to Super — Who Is Eligible?

It is important to note that temporary residents of Australia are not eligible to access superannuation under the compassionate release program. Temporary residents can, however, reclaim their super balance upon permanently departing the country.
SuperCare specialises in Compassionate Release of Super (CRS) applications and can advise you on your individual eligibility circumstances.
