Managing Children’s Dental Anxiety

For children to develop strong oral health habits, they need to begin dental care early and attend regular appointments with a trusted paediatric dental team.

Teaching children to brush properly is usually manageable. The real challenge often begins when it is time to visit the dentist. Many children experience fear — fear of dental procedures, unfamiliar environments, or even the sounds of equipment in the clinic.

Dental anxiety is very common among young patients. The important question for parents becomes: how can we protect our child’s oral health while ensuring they feel calm and cooperative during treatment?

This is where sedation dentistry for children can help.

Noticing blood on your toothbrush or while flossing is never a pleasant experience, but gum bleeding is a surprisingly widespread dental concern. That said, just because it is common does not mean it should be dismissed or ignored.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the careful use of medication to help patients feel relaxed during dental treatment.

At Dental Nook, sedation may be considered if your child:

  • Feels anxious about dental visits
  • Has a strong gag reflex
  • Requires multiple or lengthy treatments in one session
  • Struggles to remain still during procedures.

If treatment is expected to take time or requires your child to stay still with their mouth open, sedation can make the experience smoother and more comfortable.

There are three main types of dental sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)
  • Oral Sedation
  • Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as happy gas or laughing gas, is a gentle and safe sedative frequently used in paediatric dentistry.

It is:

  • Mild
  • Fast-acting
  • Easily adjustable
  • Quick to wear off

It helps reduce anxiety and discomfort while keeping your child awake and responsive.

How It Works

A small breathing mask is placed over your child’s nose. They breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which creates a relaxed and calm feeling.

Your child remains conscious and able to communicate, but feels less anxious and more comfortable.

Once the procedure is finished, the dentist switches to 100% oxygen to flush out the remaining gas. The effects wear off within minutes.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe for Children?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is widely recognised as one of the safest sedation options for children. It does not put your child to sleep, and it leaves no lingering effects once oxygen has been administered.

It is especially suitable for:

  • Mild to moderate dental anxiety
  • Children with special needs
  • Short dental procedures

IV Sedation

IV sedation involves administering sedative medication through a small injection in the arm or hand. The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout the procedure.

Under IV sedation:

  • Your child becomes deeply relaxed
  • They may have limited memory of the procedure
  • The dentist continuously monitors their comfort

In Australian paediatric dentistry, IV sedation is less commonly used in general practice settings. For more complex cases, sleep dentistry under general anaesthesia may be considered.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is given in liquid or tablet form before the dental procedure begins.

The medication typically takes between 20 minutes to one hour to become effective. It helps your child feel drowsy and calm, but they remain awake and responsive.

Oral sedation may be used for:

  • Moderate anxiety
  • Longer procedures
  • Children who need additional support before general anaesthesia

Preparing Your Child for Happy Gas

To ensure a smooth experience:

  • Avoid giving your child a heavy meal before the appointment
  • Provide only a light meal if necessary
  • Avoid dairy and greasy foods two hours prior

A full stomach can increase the likelihood of nausea.

Mild nausea or light-headedness can occasionally occur but usually resolves quickly. Offering water or clear fluids after treatment can help.

If your child also receives local anaesthetic, soft foods such as soup are recommended afterwards to prevent accidental biting of the lips or cheeks.

Is Happy Gas Used Only for Certain Procedures?

Nitrous oxide can be used for a wide range of dental treatments, including:

  • Fillings
  • Dental crowns
  • Tooth extractions
  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Professional cleaning
  • Root canal procedures

In many cases, local anaesthesia may also be used to numb the treatment area. Local anaesthetic manages pain, while happy gas manages anxiety.
