Emergency Dental Services

Severe toothache or dental abscess
What you can do before you arrive:
You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort. Avoid pain relief medicine if there is swelling or bleeding, as it can increase bleeding. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salty water. If you are unsure what to take, speak with a pharmacist or medical professional and call our team for advice. Dental Nook’s emergency dentists are here to help.
How can we help at the clinic?
Our dentists will carefully assess the area and may drain the abscess, prescribe antibiotics if needed, or perform root canal treatment to try to save the tooth. If the tooth cannot be restored, removal may be recommended to stop the infection from spreading.

Emergency Dental Care for Knocked Out Adult or Baby Teeth
What you can do before you arrive
- Adult tooth: Hold the tooth only by the white crown, the part that sits above the gum. Do not touch the root. If you cannot place it gently back into the socket, keep it moist in milk or in the person’s own saliva until you reach us.
- Baby tooth: Do not put a baby tooth back into the socket, as this can harm the developing adult tooth underneath.
- Book an urgent same-day visit: Time is very important with a knocked-out tooth. Call Dental Nook and come in straight away for the best chance of saving the tooth.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency Before You Reach
Rinse your mouth with warm salty water, take over-the-counter pain relief if suitable for you, and phone us as soon as you can. Avoid aspirin if there is any swelling.
Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. For adults, gently place it back in the socket if possible, or keep it in milk or your own saliva. For young children’s baby teeth, do not reinsert the tooth.

Can Dental Emergencies Be Avoided?

What Is and Is Not a Dental Emergency

Dental Emergencies That Need Immediate Care
Severe toothache or dental abscess
- A tooth that has been knocked out or is very loose
- Swelling of the face or signs of infection
- Broken tooth with pain or exposed nerve
- Bleeding in the mouth that will not stop
- Suspected fractured or broken jaw
- Injuries to the lips, cheeks, or tongue
Issues That Can Usually Wait For A Normal Appointment
- A small chip in a tooth that only requires smoothing
- A crown that has come loose and needs to be re-cemented
- Mouth ulcers or sores. See your pharmacist first, and if they do not settle, book a visit with our team
- Broken braces or wires. Cover any sharp ends with orthodontic wax or clean cotton until you see your dentist
- A broken dental bridge. Bring all pieces with you to your appointment at Dental Nook

Emergency Dental Care With Sedation

- Laughing gas can help you feel relaxed while you remain awake and aware.
- IV sedation, sometimes called twilight sedation, allows you to drift into a dreamy, calm state while we complete your treatment.
- For patients who need to be fully asleep for complex care, we can arrange treatment under general anaesthesia with a specialist team.
