Procedure for placing a dental crown

We prepare your tooth to retain the crown. If there is any need to remove the decay or rebuild the core, or gum health improvement, we work towards it. Then, we trim the tooth by 1 to 2 mm so as to hold the crown.

Till we get the final, custom-made crown from the lab, we give you a temporary crown to protect your tooth from any damage. Till you get your final crown, avoid using that tooth a lot.

From the impression taken, we prepare a model called a cast. A cast simulates your teeth and jaws. We build a crown on it, do the trial, make any adjustments if needed and glue the final crown to your tooth using a suitable cement. 

Types of dental crown

A dental crown is available in various materials: metal alloys, porcelain, resin, stainless steel, or a combination. The location of the tooth, the condition of the gums, aesthetics, and your preference are some of the factors that decide the most suitable crown material for you. 

Metal crowns

They are made up of alloys that have a high content of gold/ platinum/ base metal, such as nickel-chromium and cobalt-chromium. They have the longest life as they withstand the chewing forces very well. Most suited for posteriors/ back teeth. 

Though they give a metallic look, functionally, they are the best crowns. The metal alloy bonds very well with your tooth. They are also longer lasting as they are resistant to corrosion. Besides, they save a lot of your tooth structure as they require the least amount of tooth to be removed. They are also gentle on the opposing teeth. 

All-ceramic crowns

They give you the perfect looks. They are more suitable for anteriors and people allergic to metal. 

PFM/ Porcelain Fused to Metal

They are basically metal crowns with a porcelain facing. They give you all the advantages of metal crowns while matching with your adjacent teeth. PFM crowns suit all teeth and are also suitable for bridges. 

However, porcelain crowns cause more wear and tear of the opposite teeth when compared to metal crowns. Besides, porcelain can chip off at times. 

While all-ceramic crowns give you the best aesthetics, PFM crowns are next in line for aesthetics. 

The metal surface beneath the porcelain can be visible as a dark line at the gums. It is more so if the gums recede/ gums go down towards the bone. 

Stainless steel crown

They are prefabricated/ readily available crowns, more suitable for kids. We slightly trim your kid’s tooth and place the readymade crown on the same visit. It helps you get the crown for your kid’s teeth on the first visit itself. 

They are economical too. The crown prevents further decay and naturally falls when your kid’s tooth sheds. 

Stainless steel crowns are helpful in posteriors of adults as temporary replacements till the custom-made crown is ready. 

For anteriors/ front teeth, we give you temporary crowns made of tooth-coloured acrylic. 

Once the final crown is ready, we replace it. It fits the tooth snuggly, protects the tooth meticulously, is aesthetically pleasing, and longer-lasting.

Gold crown

It is the strongest crown. Though it looks like gold and not like your natural teeth, it is longer lasting and gentle on opposing teeth. 

However, gold crowns are one of the most expensive crowns and not preferred due to their gold colour. 

If you need a crown for the posterior/ back teeth and if aesthetics are not very important to you, metal crowns are the preferred choice. Otherwise, you can opt for PFM/ Porcelain Fused to Metal crown. For anteriors/ front teeth, all-ceramic crowns are most suited as they are aesthetically pleasing. 

How long do the crowns last?

If you maintain them well, dental crowns do last for a lifetime! Avoid biting anything that is extremely hard or very sticky, and follow a healthy diet.
